We’ve all heard the expression, “everything old is new again,” and if you look around, you’ll notice it’s true. From clothing to the way we listen to music, and even the way we now watch movies is becoming more and more nostalgic all the time. In fact, more people than ever before are going back to old VHS and DVD forms of entertainment, and if this is one of your own interests, you’ll need to know where to get these formats. Fortunately, this is a lot easier than you might think.

Why Choose VHS and DVD Products?

Many VHS and DVD formats still exist, and while they can include television shows and documentaries, most of them are there for you to enjoy movies in all genres. These days, most people watch entertainment that is based in the clouds and that goes directly to their television set, but if you are one of these people who prefer the old-fashioned way that involves holding something in your hand, DVDs and VHS tapes are for you. If you find these items in good shape, which is entirely possible, you can enjoy playing them over and over again for many years.

Collecting DVD disks and VHS tapes can be a lot of fun, and in fact, many of them have become very valuable through the years. The fact is, people buy these forms of entertainment for various reasons, so once you decide on the reason you’re collecting these items in the first place, it becomes much easier to determine exactly how to go about finding them. Some people buy them and keep them as collectors’ items, while others buy them so they can enjoy their favorite movies in a brand-new way.

Either way, these formats are sometimes difficult to find, especially certain ones. Indeed, many of the movies you’ll be looking for will be difficult to find. For instance, original VHS tapes of old Disney movies and very popular ones such as Star Wars or Gone with the Wind can take awhile to find, but it is certainly worth the wait because once you do find them, you’ll feel like you found a piece of rare gold. Knowing where to look to find these disks and tapes is the first step to making this happen.VHS Movies_Photo by Delaney Van

Finding the Right VHS and DVD Products

VHS tapes and DVD disks are not mass-produced like they once were, which means you’ll have to find companies that have purchased older products from the public and are now trying to resell them. What this means in practical terms is that you’ll often have to take what you can get because you may not be able to find exactly what you’re looking for at the moment. Nevertheless, finding these items is easier if you look in places that are known to carry them, including the following:

Online stores. Stores such as Amazon and eBay are great places to start. In fact, Amazon even has a “VHS Marketplace” that you can visit to find VHS tapes. With stores such as these, you’ll know the seller is going to be reliable.

Flea markets. Almost every town is close to a flea market, and it is usually open every weekend. Visiting these flea markets regularly is important because their inventory tends to change frequently. You can easily pick up VHS tapes and DVD disks for as little as 50 cents or $1 each.

Social media pages. Pages such as Facebook have marketplaces and yard sale groups that sell lots of things super inexpensive. This is a great place to begin your search for movies on VHS and DVD.

Garage sales. When the weather is nice, you can usually find several garage sales to go to every single weekend. You can find VHS tapes and DVDs at many of these sales, and they can sometimes sell for about 25 cents each.

Bonavendi.com. This store has roughly 30 vendors selling old and used items of all types, and if you check it regularly, it’s very likely you’ll come across a vendor who is selling used VHS tapes and DVDs.

Decluttr.com. This is a buying and selling website that sometimes has DVDs and VHS tapes for sale. If you’re interested in selling something, you can use their app to scan the barcode and receive an instant offer. If you have a lot of items you’re interested in selling, make sure you download the app instead of just using their website.

If you do your due diligence, you’ll be able to find a few other places that carry old VHS tapes and DVDs, but the ones mentioned above are the most reputable for sure.

What to Look for When Finding Old Movies to Buy

When you’re shopping for VHS and DVD movies at flea markets, private sellers, and garage sales, you don’t have a lot of say-so when it comes to the quality of the items you get. You just have to buy what they have and go with it. That isn’t the case with online sellers, however, so if you go to eBay, Amazon, or other stores, make sure you follow these rules:

Check the number of positive ratings for that seller.

Make sure the description of the item is very detailed so you know what you’re getting.

Check to see if the seller has an actual store or is just selling that one item.

On eBay, it’s better if they offer a Buy It Now button.

In other words, you want a seller who is devoted to selling many different products and has been in business for a while. The bigger their store and the more satisfied customers they have, the more likely you are to end up with a DVD or VHS tape that is in excellent condition and which will not be a disappointment once you get it in your home. Even better, if you collect these items long enough, you’re likely going to be surprised by how quickly your collection becomes a very large and valuable one.
